Text (by Team van Stoffelen):

The Groningen Stad En Ommeland Geocoin is dedicated to the city and the surrounding lands (the ‘Ommelanden) of Groningen. In the Middle Ages the surrounding lands frequently attacked the city of Groningen. They called themselves the Eala Frya Fresena, translated as the Free Frisians. On their part the city of Groningen frequently attacked the nobility on their strongholds in the surrounding lands. In 1594 the city of Groningen was defeated by the army of prince Maurits, count of Nassau and prince Willem of Nassau-Dillenburg. The last stronghold of the Spanish occupation in the North of the Netherlands was gone. The city and the surrounding lands were joined together.
